Akwa ibom: The AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) Nigeria has provided tuberculosis testing and counselling for at least 200 individuals in Akwa Ibom. The initiative, conducted at Nnung Udoe in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, aimed to increase awareness about tuberculosis in the region.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mr. Steve Aborisade, AHF Senior Advocacy and Marketing Manager, emphasized the necessity for public education on the signs and symptoms of tuberculosis. He noted that the initiative reflects AHF’s dedication to empowering communities to take control of their healthcare and wellbeing. Aborisade highlighted that through Power Voices, an AHF Africa community advocacy club, communities can lead health advocacy efforts on issues impacting them.
The Power Voices consist of community-focused individuals committed to advancing local health interests through awareness, education, and advocacy. Aborisade underscored the importance of community ownership for effective health project implementation and acceptance. He assured that AHF would continue to support communities in collaborating with stakeholders to address health challenges.
Miss Jessica Umoh, the Akwa Ibom Linkage Coordinator, stated that the exercise aimed to educate the community about tuberculosis signs, symptoms, and treatment. She stressed that tuberculosis is curable and not a death sentence, emphasizing the free nature of the testing and treatment provided in collaboration with KNCV Nigeria. Umoh also cautioned against the use of herbal concoctions for treating tuberculosis.
Community members who participated in the testing and counselling expressed gratitude towards AHF Nigeria, describing the initiative as a positive development for the area.
