Abuja: Mgbuka FC of Apo has emerged victorious in the maiden 2026 Game Changer Unity Cup, narrowly defeating Tyre Plaza FC 1-0 in a gripping final held in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the tightly contested final took place at the Stadium of Light within Covenant Garden Estate, Apo-Dutse, Abuja. The tournament, which commenced on June 5, featured 16 teams and concluded on Sunday, marking over two months of intense competition. Mgbuka FC’s triumph came against a formidable Tyre Plaza FC, a team that had managed to stay unbeaten until the final showdown.
Post-match, Onyeka Eze, the Abuja Automobile Spare Parts Dealers Association Chairman and Mgbuka FC Executive Chairman, expressed gratitude to both God and the team’s supporters. Eze highlighted the tournament’s role in fostering unity within Apo and providing a platform for young talents to hone their football skills. He extended his appreciation to the Apo community for their unwavering support throughout the event.
Nureni Makanjuola of Water FC lauded the efforts of the organisers and media in promoting grassroots football, emphasizing the importance of the Game Changer Unity Cup in youth development. Makanjuola encouraged the continuation and expansion of the tournament across Abuja to unearth more young talents, acknowledging the support from local authorities and dignitaries.
Mgbuka FC Captain, Chukwujekwu Nwanze, celebrated the team’s hard-earned victory, attributing their success to rigorous training, teamwork, and strategic gameplay. Meanwhile, Tyre Plaza FC Captain, Ugochukwu Elekwachi, acknowledged the learning experience gained despite the loss and vowed a stronger comeback next season.
Tyre Plaza FC Coach, Francis Chimobi, commended his team for reaching the final and appreciated the tournament’s peaceful conduct, recognizing its significance in grassroots football development. The event saw Mgbuka FC awarded the trophy, medals, and N1 million in prize money as champions. Tyre Plaza FC received N500,000 and a trophy as runners-up, while NATA FC secured third place with a prize of N300,000.
