Lagos: The Nigerian Academy of Science (NAS) has called for a review of recent appointments involving non-technocrats and non-specialists as chief executives of research institutes and science-based agencies. The call was made through a statement jointly signed by NAS President, Prof. Abubakar Sambo, and Public Affairs Secretary, Prof. Chinedum Babalola, highlighting the need for leadership to be entrusted to individuals with the appropriate technical expertise and research credentials to advance national scientific and innovation objectives.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, NAS recommended reversing appointments where necessary to ensure that leadership positions are filled by those with proven capabilities. They emphasized that the selection process for chairmen and external members of governing councils of universities and research institutions should be strictly merit-based. The Academy expressed concern over irregularities affecting the appointment of vice-chancellors, stressing the importance of due process and adherence to standard procedures to minimize controversies and ensure credible and sustainable decisions.
NAS leaders further urged the Federal and state governments to prioritize investment in scientific research and innovation, citing underinvestment and governance issues as major challenges at a time when Nigeria requires science-based solutions. The Academy highlighted critical areas such as climate change, public health, and food security that demand scientific innovation for effective resolution.
The leaders pointed out that countries achieving sustained economic growth and technological competitiveness have done so through dedicated investment in science, recommending that Nigeria follows suit by extending investments beyond projects to include human resources, research infrastructure, and robust institutional systems.
NAS also emphasized the importance of good governance in ensuring transparency, accountability, and efficiency within Nigeria’s educational and research centers. They urged governments to adopt the Academy’s 2026 agenda, which focuses on increasing and effectively managing research investments to foster a national culture of excellence and innovation in science and technology.
