ActionAid Nigeria Calls for Media Advocacy to Transform Food Systems

ABUJA: ActionAid Nigeria (AAN) has urged the media to enhance advocacy efforts for increased investment in inclusive and sustainable food systems to secure food and nutrition for all Nigerians. Mr. Andrew Mamedu, the Country Director of AAN, emphasized this point during a media workshop focused on Inclusive and Sustainable Food Systems Reporting in Abuja.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Mamedu, represented by Mrs. Suwaiba Dankabo, Deputy Country Director, highlighted that Nigeria’s food system is at a critical juncture. He described a truly inclusive food system as one that supports nutrition, livelihoods, and the future of millions, particularly those involved in food production. Mamedu identified climate change, economic challenges, conflict, and rising inequality as significant stressors on the food system, and stressed the media’s role in transforming the narrative.

Mamedu emphasized the pivotal role of media professionals in acting as agents of accountability and storytellers who amplify farmers’ voices, spotlight their challenges and achievements, and influence public discourse. He pointed out the gap in specialized reporting on inclusive food systems and underlined the importance of strengthening media engagement to drive awareness and advocacy.

Mamedu reaffirmed that an inclusive food system not only improves nutrition and livelihoods but also secures the future for millions, especially women farmers, young people, and vulnerable groups. He highlighted ActionAid’s commitment to working with these communities through respectful, rights-based engagement.

He stated that the workshop aims to equip journalists to report effectively on agriculture, climate change, and food systems to inform, educate, and influence policy. The Inclusive Food Systems Project, a part of AAN’s broader commitment, seeks to empower smallholder farmers and enable their active participation in decision-making processes.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that the workshop was organized under the Inclusive Food Systems Project, funded by the German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) and implemented by AAN.
