Ibadan: The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Oyo State has announced that it will not implement a zoning policy for its governorship position. This decision was disclosed by the party’s state Publicity Secretary, Mr. Bimpe Adelowo, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Adelowo emphasized that the party seeks to prioritize merit over sentimental zoning agendas. The goal is to select the best candidate who can effectively govern and bring positive change to Oyo State, rather than limiting the selection process to a specific region. Adelowo stated, “Our party is looking at merit, the best and not on this frivolous, sentimental agenda of zoning.”
He further explained that confining the governorship to a particular zone, such as Oke-Ogun, may not be beneficial if the selected individual lacks the capability to deliver good governance. The party’s aim is to find a candidate who can implement its manifestos, policies, and programs, ensuring the delivery of democratic dividends to the residents.
Adelowo also acknowledged the resilience of Oyo State residents amid challenges faced under the current administration led by Governor Seyi Makinde of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). He cited the circular roads issue as an instance where residents demonstrated peaceful protest without resorting to violence or property destruction.
Lastly, Adelowo encouraged the citizens to remain hopeful and actively participate in electing ADC candidates for various positions in the upcoming 2027 elections, ensuring that their voices are represented across the state.
