Abuja: The African Democratic Congress (ADC) Diaspora Chapter in the USA has raised concerns regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) decision to remove the National Working Committee (NWC) led by David Mark from its portal. The group emphasized that this action could impact party administration, particularly as the issue is currently embroiled in legal proceedings.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, INEC had announced its intention to remove the David Mark-led NWC from its portal and halt interactions with any faction of the party until a substantive suit is resolved at the Federal High Court in Abuja. INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr. Mohammed Haruna, stated that the decision was based on a review of relevant court rulings. Haruna explained that the court had instructed parties to maintain the status quo in the ADC’s leadership dispute.
Haruna further noted that the action was in line with the Court of Appeal’s judgment in Appeal No. CA/ABJ/145/2026: Senator David Mark v. Nafiu Bala Gombe and Ors., as well as the ongoing case at the Federal High Court. INEC had also received letters from two law firms representing different interests within the party, dated March 16.
In response, the ADC diaspora commented that actions taken during a legal dispute could raise questions about due process and institutional independence. The group stressed the importance of transparency and adherence to established procedures in managing party affairs. The diaspora chapter urged stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and the rule of law.
The group also called on national leaders-such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Ibrahim Babangida, Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, and Aliyu Gusau-to support efforts to reinforce democratic institutions. Additionally, it encouraged citizens to remain law-abiding and engaged in the democratic process, urging the National Assembly to continue its oversight functions in accordance with its constitutional mandate.
The ADC diaspora appealed to the international community, including the United Nations, to monitor developments in Nigeria’s democratic landscape and affirmed its commitment to exploring lawful avenues to address concerns regarding party leadership and institutional processes.
