Abuja: Wife of the Minister of Defence, Mrs. Oghogho Musa, has called on Nigerians to support the Armed Forces and the families of fallen soldiers, describing them as the ‘unseen pillars’ of national security. Musa made the call at the Humanitarian Day event, as part of the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD), for members of the Barracks Community on Saturday in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the courage of military personnel was sustained by the patience, resilience, and sacrifice of their families. The minister’s wife stated that the gathering was a reminder that the defense of the nation extends far beyond the battlefield, reaching into homes, communities, and hearts across Nigeria. She emphasized that while soldiers bear the visible weight of duty, their families carry an equally profound burden quietly and consistently.
Mrs. Musa highlighted that it is both fitting and necessary that this year’s celebration shines a light on the human side of military service. She noted that the deliberate inclusion of humanitarian-focused activities reflects a growing understanding that the welfare, morale, and dignity of soldiers and their families are central to national security and unity. The theme for this year, ‘Celebrating the Strengths Behind Our Soldiers’, captures a simple truth: behind every uniform is a family of spouses, children, and parents whose support forms the unseen pillars of the armed forces.
The event was thoughtfully designed as a path of care, inclusion, and shared joy, featuring activities such as Kiddies’ Corner, sports, talent showcases, and mentoring engagements for teenagers. These activities reflect a belief in the next generation. Mrs. Musa also paid tribute to the fallen heroes, honoring their mission and expressing gratitude to their families, whose strength continues to inspire the nation.
Mrs. Hassana Pheelangwa, Wife of the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Defence, remarked that the event was organized to celebrate the spouses and children of soldiers who continue to serve with bravery. She acknowledged that even in challenging circumstances, the quiet and unwavering strength of these families forms the foundation upon which soldiers stand.
