Abuja:The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI) has emphasized the importance of technology, investment, and value addition in transforming Nigeria’s agriculture sector to enhance its global competitiveness. This was discussed at the inaugural AGROMEQA Expo 2026 held in Abuja, themed ‘Technology and Investment for Agro-Expo.’
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the expo, organized by ACCI’s Agricultural Trade Group in collaboration with JMT Plus Farms and Agro-Allied, focused on promoting mechanization, innovation, and export development. Chief Emeka Obegolu, President of ACCI, called for increased investment in agricultural technology and mechanization to boost productivity and strengthen Nigeria’s agro-export capacity.
Obegolu highlighted the central role of agriculture in Nigeria’s economic diversification, food security, and sustainable development. He stressed the need for modern technologies and commercially-driven farming systems to enhance productivity, reduce post-harvest losses, and improve product quality. He also emphasized the significance of strengthening agricultural value chains through private investment, technology transfer, and market linkages to expand non-oil exports.
The expo showcased various agricultural machinery, precision farming tools, irrigation systems, agro-processing technologies, and climate-smart solutions. It provided a platform for technical discussions, business engagements, investment forums, and demonstrations, aimed at establishing strategic partnerships and exploring practical solutions.
Mr. Idi Maiha, Minister of Livestock Development, pointed out Nigeria’s low level of agricultural mechanization as a challenge to productivity. He advocated for increased investment in technology and farm equipment, noting that Nigeria had only three to seven tractors per 10,000 people. Maiha also highlighted opportunities in the livestock sector, which contributes significantly to the economy, and stressed the potential of red meat export markets.
Dr. Olasetemi Thompson, Vice-President of the ACCI on Agriculture and Livestock, stated that the expo would connect stakeholders to promote agricultural mechanization and value addition. He announced that the expo would become an annual event to further agriculture development and quality exports across Africa.
