Post: Federal Government Plans Major Upgrades for Moshood Abiola National Stadium

Abuja:The Federal Government is set to undertake significant renovations at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium to enhance its ability to host sporting events and other activities.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Malam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC), disclosed these plans during a meeting with representatives from four Federal Government-owned media organizations—News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), Voice of Nigeria (VON), and Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN).

Dikko outlined ongoing and proposed improvements aimed at elevating the stadium to a world-class facility. These enhancements include upgrading the grass playing surface, improving lighting, and adding essential infrastructure. Additionally, the commission is considering installing a roof to enhance the stadium’s appearance and functionality for various events.

The proposed updates are designed to attract athletes, sports administrators, event promoters, and private investors. The commission aims to transform the stadium into a multipurpose sports and entertainment center capable of generating revenue beyond match days.

Dikko emphasized the importance of making the stadium a vibrant sports complex featuring hospitality, commercial, and conference facilities. The plan includes encouraging private-sector investment in sports infrastructure development and management, reducing reliance on government funding, and creating employment and business growth opportunities.

He also stressed the value of treating sports infrastructure as a national asset that can deliver economic benefits when well-maintained and commercially managed. Collaboration with the media is seen as vital for promoting sports development, attracting investment, and highlighting Nigeria’s sporting achievements.

Dikko called for stronger partnerships between the commission and government-owned media organizations to improve sports coverage and public awareness of ongoing reforms. He highlighted the commission’s commitment to grassroots sports development, expanding opportunities for young athletes, and enhancing Nigeria’s international competitiveness in sports.

The meeting allowed for discussions on media collaboration and strategies to promote sports development and investment in Nigeria.
