Abuja:Mustapha Abdullahi has been elected President of the Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF), defeating former D’Tigers captain Olumide Oyedeji and ex-International Ejike Ugboaja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Abdullahi secured 48 votes in the election held on Thursday, while Oyedeji received eight votes. Ugboaja did not secure any votes. Abdullahi succeeds outgoing President Musa Kida, marking the beginning of a new administration for the federation.
Ugo Udezue emerged unopposed as the NBBF Vice President, being the sole candidate for the position. The election signifies a new leadership phase for Nigerian basketball, with the new board expected to address challenges such as domestic competitions, grassroots development, players’ welfare, funding, and the enhancement of basketball structures nationwide.
Abdullahi, who is also the Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, takes office during a critical period for the sport. His leadership follows the international successes of the national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, and increasing calls for stronger structures to sustain basketball development within the country. The new administration aims to build on these achievements by creating more opportunities for players and enhancing the competitiveness of domestic basketball.
