Post: Anaesthetists Call for Improved Staffing and Equipment in Nigeria

Abuja:The Nigerian Society of Anaesthetists (NSA) has appealed for increased recruitment, enhanced welfare, and better-equipped operating theatres and intensive care units across the country to boost patient safety during surgical procedures.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the society made this appeal in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, Dr. Agwu Nnanna, in Abuja ahead of World Anaesthesia Day 2026, which is set for October 16.

The NSA’s statement indicates its collaboration with the World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists (WFSA) to mark the annual event, which celebrates the inception of modern anaesthesia. The theme, “Before, During and Beyond Surgery,” underscores the vital role anaesthetists play in ensuring patient safety throughout the surgical process.

Prof. Alhassan Mohammed, NSA President, emphasized the indispensable contributions of anaesthetists to Nigeria’s healthcare system, often unrecognized by the public. He explained their roles in assessing patient readiness for surgery, maintaining safety and comfort during operations, and supporting recovery post-surgery, which can occur in Post-Anaesthesia Care Units (PACUs) or Intensive Care Units (ICUs) based on clinical needs.

Mohammed highlighted significant challenges, including a shortage of physician anaesthetists, lack of adequate monitoring equipment, and limited public understanding of the profession. He urged federal and state governments to address these issues by recruiting more anaesthetists and improving their pay and welfare to retain skilled professionals.

He also called for government action to provide adequate training and equip healthcare facilities to meet essential patient safety standards. Additionally, the NSA affirmed its dedication to ongoing professional training, advocacy, and collaboration to decrease anaesthesia-related maternal and surgical deaths in Nigeria.

Mohammed acknowledged the commitment of anaesthetists working under challenging conditions nationwide, praising their efforts to protect patients and enhance surgical outcomes.
