Yola: The Anglican Diocese of Yola has announced a strategic partnership with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) to enhance advocacy efforts against Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in Adamawa. Ifeanyichukwu Mmaduakonam, the GBV Desk Officer of the diocese, highlighted this collaboration during an advocacy visit to NAN’s Yola office.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the purpose of the visit was to bolster media engagement and collaboration aimed at addressing the increasing GBV cases in the region. Mmaduakonam emphasized the pivotal role of media organizations in shaping public awareness and driving advocacy efforts against gender-based violence. He added that under the guidance of Archbishop Marcus Ibrahim, the diocese seeks a sustained partnership with NAN to confront the societal challenge.
Mmaduakonam pointed out several factors contributing to GBV, such as victims’ reluctance to speak out, lack of awareness of rights, gender inequality, weak law enforcement, and detrimental cultural, religious, and family practices. Additionally, he identified alcohol and drug abuse, and disbelief in the equality of human rights, as major drivers of GBV. He called for a collaborative effort with religious institutions, communities, and stakeholders to address this escalating issue.
Apeiker Iorsoo, another team member, elaborated on strategies to eradicate GBV, including empowering women and girls and challenging damaging social attitudes. He stressed the importance of educating men and boys to respect women and girls and raising awareness across religious and societal contexts. Iorsoo also highlighted the necessity for reforms in judiciary, healthcare, and social support systems to effectively respond to GBV cases and protect victims. He urged parents to proactively guide their children to prevent exposure to abuse and encouraged religious and community leaders to promote values that deter violence.
In response, Mrs. Talatu Maiwada, NAN State Correspondent, expressed appreciation for the delegation’s visit and advocacy efforts. She assured the visitors of NAN’s commitment to collaborate through ongoing media coverage to combat GBV. (NAN)
