Addis ababa: The African Union (AU) Commissioner has made a fervent appeal for the establishment of a permanent ceasefire in the conflict-ridden regions of Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This call was made during a briefing with reporters at the 39th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government of the AU.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the commissioner, Adeoye, described the situation in Sudan as “the worst humanitarian crisis globally.” He emphasized the grave nature of the conflict, which erupted in April 2023, and noted its substantial impact on regional stability, despite it being “virtually unreported.” Adeoye stressed the importance of achieving a permanent, unconditional, inclusive, and immediate ceasefire in Sudan, underscoring the need for peace not only for the region but for the continent as a whole.
Adeoye expressed gratitude for the efforts made by various stakeholders in addressing the conflict in Sudan. He mentioned that several mechanisms have been established to exert diplomatic pressure on the parties involved, with the aim of securing a permanent ceasefire. The urgency of resolving the conflict is paramount to alleviating the suffering of civilians and preventing the conflict’s spillover into neighboring countries.
In regards to the situation in the eastern DRC, Adeoye highlighted the positive developments emerging from the AU-led mediation efforts aimed at de-escalating hostilities and restoring peace and security in the region. He urged the M23 group and all conflicting parties to cease hostilities, engage in meaningful dialogue, and commit to a permanent ceasefire. Adeoye reiterated the AU’s commitment to working with the international community to immediately and permanently silence the guns across Africa.
