Karu: Bingham University, located in Karu, Nasarawa State, officially welcomed 1,805 new students during its 21st matriculation ceremony. The event marked the entry of students into 15 faculties, encompassing 63 departments and 48 academic programs.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Haruna Ayuba highlighted the significance of the matriculation ceremony as a pivotal event in the university’s calendar. He noted that it serves as a platform to promote the institution’s vision, mission, values, and traditions. Prof. Ayuba emphasized that the ceremony helps in fostering a sense of community among students and staff while preparing new students for the academic challenges of university life.
Prof. Ayuba addressed the new students, stating that matriculation marks the beginning of a new chapter in their academic journey. He explained that it signifies their transition from secondary school to university life, where they affirm their commitment to higher education and embrace the core values and principles of Bingham University. He urged students to actively participate in lectures, adhere to university rules, maintain good conduct, and uphold biblical virtues such as honesty, integrity, and respect for staff and peers.
He also encouraged students to take responsibility for the campus environment, respect green spaces, and avoid any unethical behavior, including destruction of infrastructure or involvement in riots. The Vice-Chancellor advised students to seek help when needed from faculty deans, heads of department, level coordinators, or student affairs officers. He emphasized that the university offers robust support systems, including chaplains and counseling services.
Guest speaker Dr. Chibuzo Samuel-Son, who addressed the theme ‘Leveraging Legacies for Limitless Impact,’ urged the new students to believe in themselves, embrace hard work, and remain focused despite distractions or setbacks. He encouraged them to build friendships that support their academic goals and to persist in the face of challenges.
The ceremony concluded with expressions of joy and gratitude from newly matriculated students and their parents. Ms. Jomani Ofure from the Department of Medical Laboratory Science described her admission as a significant achievement. Meanwhile, Mr. Ayoyimika Olakunle from the Department of Medicine and Surgery encouraged aspiring undergraduates to remain focused and excel in their examinations.
