Abuja: The Tukur Buratai Research Centre (TBRC) has introduced six new professional courses aimed at enhancing leadership, resilience, and command capabilities in counterinsurgency operations. These courses are designed to equip military leaders with the necessary skills to make informed decisions, adapt to operational challenges, and maintain effectiveness in complex security environments.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, retired Brig.-Gen. Sani Usman, the Director-General and Secretary of the TBRC Board of Trustees, stated that the courses were developed by an expert committee consisting of retired senior military officers, academics, and specialists in military operations, leadership, resilience, and security studies. The program took place over four days in Abuja, from August 24 to August 27, bringing together retired officers from the Nigerian Army, Navy, and Air Force.
The six courses include Tactical Resilience in COIN, Tactical Leadership and Command in COIN, Operational Resilience in COIN, and Operational Leadership and Command in COIN. Additionally, Strategic Resilience in COIN Environment and Strategic Leadership in COIN Environment were highlighted as part of the new curriculum. Usman mentioned that these courses focus on preparing commanders to anticipate, withstand, and adapt to uncertainty, adversity, and operational pressures.
The courses aim to strengthen unit cohesion, morale, decision-making, and mission effectiveness across tactical, operational, and strategic command levels. Resilience is emphasized not just as the ability to endure adversity but as a leadership quality that enables commanders and institutions to adapt, recover, learn, and remain effective under pressure.
The multidisciplinary approach ensures that the courses remain practical, context-specific, and responsive to modern counterinsurgency operations’ realities. The completed curricula and course modules were formally submitted to the Chairman of the TBRC Board of Trustees, retired Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, on August 27 for further consideration and action. This initiative marks a significant milestone in TBRC’s efforts to develop capable, adaptive, and resilient military leaders, providing a structured platform for enhancing leadership competencies and resilience among commanders at various levels.
