Cape verde: Cape Verde pulled a stunner in their first ever World Cup game as they held Spain to a goalless draw in the opening game of Group H.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, one of the tournament favourites, Spain, couldn’t find a way through debutant Cape Verde, despite dominating possession for most of the game. Barcelona forward Ferran Torres came close to scoring for Spain in the first half, but his effort hit the bar from close range.
Cape Verde goalkeeper Vozinha was instrumental in keeping out goal-bound shots from Mikel Oyarzabal, Ferran Torres, and Aymeric Laporte. Despite the introduction of Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal, Spain couldn’t break the deadlock as Cape Verde remained defensively solid.
The Africans also managed to create goal-scoring opportunities but failed to capitalize on them. Spain’s captain, Rodri, acknowledged his team’s inability to convert chances as Cape Verde defended resolutely. “It just wasn’t to be; there’s little to criticize. We knew it would be a game of patience; they sat deep, we created chances, but we couldn’t score,” Rodri stated. He added that while Cape Verde was a physical and defensive side, Spain needed to improve their finishing.
Speaking after the game, Cape Verde midfielder Laros Duarte expressed optimism about his team’s future performances. “I have a good feeling moving forward because we know what we are capable of. It is realistic to start thinking now in qualifying to the next round and the feeling is good,” Duarte said.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that Spain will face Saudi Arabia on Sunday, June 21, while Cape Verde will take on Uruguay on the same day.
