Abuja: The Catholic Women Organisation (CWO), Abuja Archdiocese, has unveiled plans for a multi-purpose secretariat aimed at promoting economic empowerment, healthcare access, and spiritual development as part of its contribution to nation-building. The initiative was announced by Dr. Mabel Ilukwe, the President of CWO, Abuja Archdiocese, during the 2026 Catholic Women Organisation, Abuja Archdiocese (CWOAA) Day Celebration at St. Charles Lwanga Catholic Church, Apo, Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ilukwe described the project as a historic milestone and the first of its kind in the archdiocese in the last 14 years, reflecting the organisation’s commitment to sustainable development. The proposed complex will include a 111-room Marian Hostel for retreats, an event centre, chapel, cr¨ches, and recreation fields to serve members and the wider community. Additionally, it will feature a fully equipped 24-hour hospital with a theatre and labour room to provide emergency healthcare services and improve access to quality medical care.
Ilukwe highlighted the organisation’s role in nation-building, stating that their efforts extend from Church teachings to home practices. The secretariat will also house a Skill Acquisition Centre aimed at addressing youth unemployment and empowering women with practical skills for improved livelihoods and family welfare. Ilukwe noted the centre’s potential to empower women and youths to support their families, reduce financial burdens on husbands, and enhance economic power within homes.
Ilukwe emphasised the capacity of women to drive social and economic transformation, noting the significant contributions of Catholic women across various sectors including healthcare, engineering, banking, politics, and security. Dr. Hope Cole, representing the Confraternity of Christian Mothers Association of Nigeria, praised the CWO for fostering unity, collaboration, and inclusion among women’s groups within the Church.
An award recipient and former President of CWO Holy Cross Parish, Gwarinpa, Lady Nkem Omeghara, expressed gratitude for the recognition of women’s contributions by the archdiocese. She mentioned that such recognition would motivate women to continue their selfless service to communities and contribute to the growth of the Church and society.
The event, hosted by Rev. Fr. Thomas Edogbanya, Parish Priest of St. Charles Lwanga, and Mrs. Frances Chioma, parish CWO President, included prayers for Nigeria and awards honoring outstanding women.
