Abuja: The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has called for robust and cost-effective defence solutions to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to tackle evolving security threats. Oluyede, represented by Maj.-Gen. Aniedi Edet, spoke at the NISECEXPO-DICON International Defence and Security Show 2025 held in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event was organised by the Nigeria Security Exhibition and Conference (NISECEXPO) in collaboration with the Defence Industries Corporation of Nigeria (DICON). The theme of the event was ‘Future Wars: Operational Endurance and Force Build-up Capabilities.’ The CDS emphasized that the exhibition serves as a crucial platform for promoting indigenous defence production and technology.
Gen. Oluyede highlighted that Nigeria’s adversaries have evolved from conventional armed groups to complex networks operating across multiple domains, necessitating a unified and integrated response. He detailed ongoing reforms, including the establishment of a Permanent Joint Theatre Command and a review of the 2017 joint structure to align with global best practices.
Oluyede also discussed the creation of the Joint Doctrine and Warfare Centre, aimed at developing joint doctrines, joint training, and integrated operational concepts. Future plans include establishing integrated command centres to enhance situational awareness and multi-domain operations.
Addressing emerging technologies, Oluyede warned of the rapid global shift towards autonomous systems and artificial intelligence, stressing the importance of integrating these technologies into Nigeria’s defence posture. He noted the critical role of cyber and space capabilities in national defence and highlighted efforts by the Defence Space Administration to bolster resilience in these areas.
The CDS underscored the need for strategic communication to shape public perception and national cohesion, particularly in an era of rapid digital misinformation. He praised the National Intelligence Fusion Centre for its effectiveness in real-time intelligence sharing and counter-terrorism operations.
Gen. Oluyede reiterated the importance of a comprehensive approach to addressing insecurity, involving government, traditional institutions, industry stakeholders, and citizens. He encouraged ongoing development of tailored defence solutions and collaboration with local research institutions to enhance indigenous capacity.
Mr. Frank Ohwofa, co-host of the event and CEO of NISECEXPO, stated that Nigeria showcased advanced innovations at the expo, focusing on enhancing the country’s response to asymmetric threats. He anticipated that the event would result in new partnerships and cooperation agreements, particularly those supporting local content development.
Ohwofa stressed the importance of local content for national security, cautioning against reliance on foreign equipment due to geopolitical and supply-chain risks. He commended indigenous companies demonstrating capabilities in producing military equipment, emphasizing the importance of self-reliance and long-term stability.
