Abuja: The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to defending the nation’s democracy. Oluyede stated this at the closing ceremony of the Chief of Defence Staff Democracy Day Volleyball Championship 2026 in Abuja, stressing the importance of professionalism, unity, physical fitness, and non-kinetic engagements in addressing contemporary security challenges.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Oluyede, represented by the Chief of Defence Civil-Military Relations, Rear Adm. Sabiru Lawal, said the championship underscored the military’s commitment to promoting values essential for national security and democratic stability. He noted that the competition came at a critical time when Nigeria continues to confront diverse security threats requiring both kinetic and non-kinetic responses. Sporting competitions, he added, contribute to building physical fitness, discipline, resilience, and teamwork among military personnel, which are indispensable for operational readiness and effective service delivery in defense of the nation’s sovereignty and democratic institutions.
‘Volleyball is much more than a game. It fosters concentration, endurance, resilience, and collective effort, which are equally essential in the discharge of our responsibilities as defenders of our nation,’ Oluyede said. He further emphasized that the championship also strengthened camaraderie, professionalism, and unity among personnel of the Armed Forces.
