Lagos: A member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Miss Temiloluwa Owolabi, has taken a significant step towards fostering technological literacy by organizing an Artificial Intelligence (AI) literacy session for students in a public secondary school in Lagos State.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the students, from Immaculate Heart Comprehensive High School, Ikeja, participated in a training session aimed at equipping them with foundational knowledge and skills necessary for navigating an AI-driven world.
The initiative, themed ‘I, AI and You: Learning to Think, Engage and Create in an AI-Driven World’, was part of Owolabi’s personal community development project. The training took place on Thursday at Education District 2 Headquarters, Maryland. Owolabi, who studied Electrical/Electronics Engineering and is currently working at Greenpeg Nig. Ltd. in Ikeja, was motivated by her STEM background to empower students through this project. She highlighted the importance of understanding AI’s rapi
d transformation of the world, emphasizing the need to equip children with the knowledge to engage with AI safely and productively.
Owolabi pointed out the risks associated with widespread AI use and the necessity of teaching children about responsible AI use and digital ethics. Mrs. Bolanle Apena-Mafemi, Vice-Principal of Immaculate Heart Comprehensive High School, praised the initiative, describing it as a rare commitment to youth development and calling for further support to sustain such learning efforts. She emphasized the need for digital learning gadgets and AI-related training for both students and teachers.
Students who attended the session, like Master Yusuf Ridwan and Miss Margaret Okereke, expressed their gratitude and newfound understanding of AI concepts. Yusuf, aspiring to study Robotics Engineering, highlighted the importance of such initiatives in preparing students for the AI revolution, while Margaret, an aspiring lawyer, appreciated learning how to use AI positively.
