Calabar: The Cross River Health Management Board has reported one death due to lassa fever in the state during the period between January and July. The Chief Epidemiologist, Dr. Inyang Ekpenyong, shared this information during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Calabar.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Dr. Ekpenyong revealed that out of the two confirmed cases of lassa fever recorded in the state during this period, one resulted in death. Additionally, there were 23 suspected cases reported from Obubra and Abi Local Government Areas, marking a significant decrease from the 90 suspected cases recorded in the previous year, 2024.
Dr. Ekpenyong highlighted that in 2024, the state experienced no fewer than 90 suspected cases along with eight deaths attributed to lassa fever. Despite not anticipating a rise in cases for the remainder of the year, the board has prepared emergency response plans to address any potential outbreak.
Furthermore, the board is actively conducting mass sensitisation campaigns throughout the state. These initiatives aim to educate residents about prevention techniques to curb the spread of lassa fever.
