Post: Delta North Rainbow Coalition Advocates for Legislative Expertise in 2027 Senate Race

Abuja: A socio-political group, Delta North Rainbow Coalition, has emphasized the need for a legislator rather than a mere politician to represent the Delta North Senatorial District in the 2027 elections. The group’s assertion was made during a news conference in Abuja, where Chairman Ikada Desmond and Secretary Anthony Nwani articulated their position.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the coalition highlighted the upcoming 2027 general elections as a crucial moment for the Delta North community to evaluate the quality of representation they seek in the Nigerian Senate. The group emphasized that the decision should not hinge on political popularity but should be guided by an assessment of competence, legislative capacity, integrity, and a commitment to equitable development across the district.

The coalition contrasted the candidates, Victor Ochei of Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa of All Progressives Congress (APC), framing the election as a choice between two distinct visions of representation. They noted Okowa’s extensive political career, questioning the tangible transformation achieved during his tenure, particularly in infrastructure, education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.

The coalition underscored the role of the Senate, emphasizing the need for lawmakers capable of enacting laws, overseeing government activities, and advocating for national policies and federal projects. They argued that Ochei’s legislative career, notably his tenure as Speaker of the Delta State House of Assembly, aligns well with the responsibilities of a senator, highlighting his reforms and commitment to legislative excellence.

Reflecting on the 2023 general elections, the coalition pointed out Okowa’s failure to secure victory in his own ward while serving as the incumbent governor and vice-presidential candidate, suggesting a shift in public sentiment. Meanwhile, they commended Ochei for his inclusive leadership and ability to engage with diverse communities, which has bolstered his reputation as a unifying candidate for the 2027 election.

The coalition also addressed concerns about political succession within Delta North, citing reports of Okowa’s family members seeking political offices. They advocated for broader participation in leadership roles, cautioning against the concentration of political opportunities within a single family or community.

In conclusion, the Delta North Rainbow Coalition argued that the Senate should not be a retirement destination for former governors but a platform for legislators committed to representing their constituents’ interests effectively at the national level.
