Benin: The Edo Government has unveiled a simplified version of its disability rights law designed to benefit persons living with disabilities across the 18 local government areas of the state. This initiative aims to enhance the protection of the rights and dignity of persons with disabilities.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the unveiling ceremony was attended by various stakeholders, including Mr Umar Ikhilor, Secretary to the State Government, who was represented by the Acting Permanent Secretary, Mr Ohunyon Ekikioya. Ikhilor emphasized that the strength of a society is measured by its commitment to providing equal opportunities for all its citizens, including those with disabilities.
The programme, organized by the Edo State Commission for Persons with Disabilities with support from the Network for Advancement of People with Disabilities and the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme, highlighted the importance of making laws accessible. The simplified disability rights law ensures that its provisions are easily understood by citizens, particularly persons with disabilities and their families, thereby promoting public awareness and compliance.
Mr Melody Omosah, Executive Director of the Network for the Advancement of People with Visible Disabilities, suggested the introduction of radio programmes to further raise public awareness of disability rights. He highlighted Section 18 of the state disability law, which ensures education for persons with disabilities from primary school to university level and mandates the establishment of special schools in each local government area.
Mr Theophilus Egbodion, Chairman of the Edo State Commission for Persons with Disabilities, stated that the simplified version of the law would educate individuals with disabilities about their rights. Participant Mr Ovenseri Iduozee expressed gratitude to the state government, noting that the law would help persons with disabilities understand that they have the same rights and opportunities as other citizens.
