Enugu: Neurosurgeons at Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital, Enugu State, south east Nigeria, have successfully performed two complex brain surgeries, with both patients making remarkable recoveries within days.
According to Voice of Nigeria, the Vice-Chancellor of Godfrey Okoye University, Prof. Christian Anieke, made the announcement while addressing academic staff, principal officers, and service directors of the institution. Anieke elaborated that in one case, specialists successfully removed a blood clot from an elderly patient’s brain, leading to restored health and mobility. In another critical procedure, neurosurgeons performed a life-saving decompressed craniotomy on a patient suffering from severe brain swelling due to a stroke. These procedures were aimed at preventing further damage and aiding recovery.
The Vice-Chancellor noted that these achievements were a testament to the expertise, dedication, and teamwork of the hospital’s neurosurgeons, anesthetists, and support staff. He emphasized that these successes reaffirm Godfrey Okoye University Teaching Hospital’s commitment to providing world-class healthcare in Enugu through life-saving interventions and advanced surgical care for the local community and beyond.
Anieke also announced that nursing students at the university would begin their academic activities at the institution’s main campus in October.
In addition, the Vice-Chancellor shared that the university had received grants from foreign organizations for various research projects. This financial support was described as international recognition of the institution’s contributions to educational growth. Anieke further explained that the university had introduced an intelligent test for final-year students to ensure that the quality of its graduates meets international standards.
Prof. Frank Akpuaka, the Provost of the College of Medicine, commended the Vice-Chancellor for hiring qualified medical professionals for the university’s health facility. Akpuaka also revealed that the university had acquired a Computerised Tomography machine worth over N1 billion and a new building for medical personnel and academic activities, which will significantly support the university’s expansion program.
