Abuja: The European Union (EU) has reaffirmed its commitment to the successful implementation of the environmental restoration of Ogoniland under the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP). Zissimos Vergos, Deputy Head of EU Delegation to Nigeria and Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), expressed this commitment during the Conference on Donor Facilitation and Diplomatic Support Engagement for HYPREP.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Vergos highlighted the significance of the 2011 Environmental Assessment of Ogoniland conducted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), which uncovered extensive hydrocarbon contamination affecting the soil, groundwater, and mangrove ecosystems in Ogoniland. The assessment revealed severe consequences for the health and livelihoods of the local population. In response, the Nigerian government established HYPREP, an institutional commitment backed by law and resources aimed at environmental restoration.
The EU, as a long-standing partner in the remediation programme, has been actively involved due to the project’s governance structure, which includes a Governing Council, Board of Trustees, and a Project Coordination Office. This structure is designed to promote accountability and sustain the trust of the Ogoni people. Vergos emphasized the EU’s continued dedication to community-centred approaches to address environmental degradation, violence, and insecurity in the Niger Delta region.
Vergos also stressed the importance of maintaining technically credible and community-centred remediation processes free from conflicts of interest, which could undermine public confidence. He acknowledged the progress made by HYPREP as a significant milestone but noted that additional efforts, resources, and international solidarity are essential for the successful completion of the cleanup exercise. The resilience and patience of the Ogoni people remain the moral foundation of the restoration programme.
Furthermore, there are donor commitments from financial institutions, development partners, and organizations such as Fidelity Bank and Premium Trust Bank, among others. These entities have pledged strong support for the project’s strategic goals, aiming to restore the region effectively.
