Bauchi: The Manager of the Renal Centre at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Mrs. Hamamatu Haruna, has expressed concern over the increasing number of children being referred for dialysis.
According to Voice of Nigeria, Haruna highlighted that most of the pediatric cases are linked to preventable diseases, particularly malaria. She explained that many children referred for dialysis suffer from malaria-related complications that could be avoided with basic public health measures.
Haruna urged media practitioners to enhance public health campaigns to prevent diseases such as malaria. She stressed the importance of media involvement in raising awareness about the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets, maintaining good hygiene practices, and regular hand washing to reduce the incidence of these preventable conditions.
Furthermore, Haruna pointed out that among adults, the leading causes of dialysis are complications from poorly managed hypertension, diabetes, and dehydration. She emphasized the importance of proper hydration, advising the public to consume the recommended daily amount of water to maintain kidney health.
