Abuja: Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, announced that companies contracted to install and manage streetlights in the FCT are incorporating security features to prevent vandalism.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Wike disclosed this initiative following his inspection of ongoing road projects in Abuja. He noted that streetlights have been frequent targets of vandalism by criminals. The companies tasked with this project are China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC) and CGC Nigerian Ltd.
Wike explained that as part of the contractual agreement, a security feature would be installed on the streetlights to deter theft across the region. He stated, “The streetlights will have a Surveillance Module with a Control Room, such that any attempt to vandalise them will be captured.”
The Minister further commended CCECC for their progress, particularly on the Airport Road, and expressed optimism that once the projects by both companies are completed, there will be a significant reduction in streetlight theft.
He explained that this measure is crucial due to the limited availability of security personnel to safeguard the streetlights. Wike questioned, “I mean, how many policemen will you have on the road to go and check vandalisation of street lights?” He emphasized that the situation room would enable monitoring to mitigate vandalism effectively.
The News Agency of Nigeria also recalls that Wike had previously inaugurated a solar lighting project aimed at illuminating Abuja, enhancing security, and reducing maintenance costs. This solar-powered streetlight initiative was launched in October 2025, with the goal of illuminating 80 percent of the city.
