Post: FCT Teachers’ Strike Suspended Following Ministerial Intervention

Gwagwalada: The State Wing Executive Council (SWEC) of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has suspended the ongoing strike by primary and secondary school teachers with immediate effect. This decision comes after efforts to address the grievances of the educators in the region.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the SWEC Chairman, Mr. Abdullahi Shafa, announced the suspension during a news conference in Gwagwalada. The resolution to halt the strike was made after an emergency meeting aimed at reviewing the intervention measures by the FCT Minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, who has been actively involved in resolving the dispute that was declared on April 20, 2026.

The minister has committed a monthly allocation of N5 billion to address the outstanding needs of teachers. Specifically, the minister has approved the release of N2 billion monthly from the FCT Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) and an additional N3 billion from the 10 percent IGR allocated to the Area Councils. This funding will be used to implement a 40 percent peculiar allowance and to settle the outstanding entitlements of primary school teachers.

Regarding promotions, Shafa stated that the minister has promised to engage with the Chairman of the FCT Civil Service Commission to remove the vacancy precondition for teacher promotions and to review the 2024 promotion exercise. This move aims to provide fair opportunities for career advancement among teachers.

Consequently, the council has directed all FCT primary and secondary school teachers to resume duties on Monday, April 27. Shafa emphasized that no teacher should face repercussions for participating in the strike, and he assured that the council would reassess its stance if the FCT administration fails to uphold the agreement.

He expressed appreciation for the teachers’ solidarity and reaffirmed SWEC’s dedication to enhancing working conditions within the FCT.
