Mararraba: Traders in Mararraba and Aso markets have appealed for temporary access roads and improved drainage, citing ongoing road construction that has disrupted businesses and reduced customer patronage. The roadworks have led to challenges such as flooding and traffic congestion, affecting market accessibility, particularly during rainfall.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the traders expressed their concerns during interviews, highlighting how the construction has adversely impacted sales. Mr. Mohammed Baba, Chairman of Heart Plaza in Mararraba Market, noted the difficulty customers face in accessing the market, especially those traveling from Abuja. He shared that his phone sales have drastically dropped from up to 40 units a day to sometimes only two, due to accessibility issues. He suggested that creating a temporary access road with gravel and light filling could ease movement for both traders and customers until the project is completed.
Mr. Abubakar Sadiq, a mobile phone dealer, described the road conditions as hazardous, exacerbated by traffic congestion and flooding. He explained that even without rain, traffic remains heavy, but conditions worsen with rainfall due to inadequate drainage, leading to accidents and water flowing across the road. Sadiq stated that the poor road conditions during rain deter customers from visiting the market.
Mr. Ali Tamadi, a trader and resident, mentioned that the plaza’s location within the construction corridor makes access difficult, particularly during rains. He expressed concern that prolonged construction might extend into the peak end-of-year trading season, affecting traders’ ability to balance their books.
Mrs. Patience John, a fish seller, reported a significant decrease in customer turnout and sales due to the ongoing roadworks. She shared that her sales have halved since the construction began, as customers avoid the market due to the deteriorating road conditions, especially in rainy weather.
While the traders commended the pace of the road project, they urged contractors and relevant authorities to provide temporary access routes and drainage solutions. These measures would facilitate movement and help sustain business activities during the construction period.
