Abuja: The Federal Government has disbursed N18 billion in severance benefits to 2,700 former Nigeria Airways workers, marking the end of a prolonged wait for these employees following the liquidation of the airline over two decades ago. The announcement was made by the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, at a press briefing in Abuja.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Oyedele stated that payments have been completed for 2,100 beneficiaries spanning batches one to seven, with an additional 600 beneficiaries in batches eight and nine nearing finalization. He emphasized that the payments are about more than just financial compensation; they represent a commitment to honoring government obligations to its citizens, restoring dignity and trust.
The minister detailed that the payments amount to N18 billion allocated for 2,700 former employees, acknowledging the significant delay in fulfilling this obligation. The process involved rigorous verification measures, incl
uding biometric capture and validation of personnel and banking information to safeguard against fraudulent claims. Oyedele assured that the government is working to resolve issues related to outdated information, incorrect banking details, and ensuring that benefits are accessible to the next of kin of deceased beneficiaries.
Oyedele highlighted that the government is paying beneficiaries in batches, focusing on those with fully validated records, to ensure fair and transparent handling of public funds. He also noted that the government is addressing broader fiscal reforms, including obligations to pensioners and indigenous contractors, prioritizing smaller contractors to expedite payments.
The minister reiterated the government’s commitment to meeting its obligations based on verified records and providing support to affected families to complete necessary legal processes for accessing benefits.
