Ijagun: The Federal Government has officially assumed ownership and management of the Tai Solarin Federal University of Education (TASFUED), Ijagun, from the Ogun State Government. The transition was formalized during the university’s 17th convocation ceremony, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed by Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun and Minister of State for Education, Dr. Suwaiba Ahmad.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the handover marks a pivotal moment in the institution’s history and the government’s strategy to enhance the educational sector. During the ceremony, Dr. Ahmad highlighted the significance of the university’s transition from a state-owned to a federal institution, emphasizing the government’s dedication to renewing and stabilizing education in Nigeria.
Dr. Ahmad noted that the decision to incorporate the university into the federal system was driven by national interest and the belief that educational reforms hinge on investment in quality teaching. She praised the Ogun State Government for its stewardship and acknowledged the efforts of the university’s founders.
The minister stated that the federal government’s move aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, focusing on strengthening institutions and human capital. She also congratulated the graduating students, affirming the university’s unique role in Nigeria’s higher education landscape and its achievements over two decades.
In his address, Governor Abiodun welcomed the federal takeover, acknowledging that it promotes national equity and enhances the educational landscape of the Ogun East Senatorial District. He expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu for endorsing the transition, linking it to broader national development goals.
The Acting Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Adekunle Adeogun, identified student accommodation as a critical issue and called for support to improve living conditions. He also highlighted the need for expanded lecture facilities to accommodate the university’s new federal status.
The event also saw the conferment of honorary degrees on notable individuals, including First Lady Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, represented by Hajia Nana Shettima, Governor Abiodun, and former state governor Chief Olusegun Osoba. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries such as Oba Kehinde Olugbenle, Oba Saka Matemilola, and Oba Razaq Adenugba.
