Abuja: The Federal Government has taken a significant step to boost operational efficiency at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA) in Abuja by deploying 10 electric shuttle buses and 20 electric sedans. This initiative was inaugurated by Mr. Abdullahi Ganduje, the Board Chairman of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), marking a milestone in improving service delivery.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ganduje highlighted the importance of modernizing airport operations and aligning Nigeria’s aviation sector with global best practices. He emphasized that the introduction of these electric vehicles would enhance logistics, staff movement, and passenger coordination at the airport, ultimately improving efficiency.
Ganduje pointed out the operational and environmental benefits of electric vehicles, noting their energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. He stated that this initiative aligns with the International Civil Aviation Organisation’s goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050, positioning Nigerian airports to be competitive and responsible.
The chairman also commended President Bola Tinubu for his administration’s support for aviation sector reforms, reflecting a policy direction that prioritizes efficiency and sustainability. He assured that the FAAN board is committed to expanding this program to other airports in the country.
FAAN Managing Director, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, announced that FAAN has secured approval to deploy 100 electric vehicles in partnership with private sectors. She described the launch of these electric buses as a significant step towards reducing the carbon footprint at Nigeria’s airports and enhancing passenger experiences.
Kuku noted that FAAN is improving staff welfare and service standards, while also addressing challenges posed by ageing facilities. She credited the support of President Tinubu and the Honourable Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo, for enabling these advancements.
Looking ahead, FAAN plans to implement clean energy solutions across Nigeria’s airports, from solar power to comprehensive electric vehicle infrastructure, positioning FAAN as a leader in eco-friendly aviation management in Africa. Kuku also highlighted FAAN’s ‘Go-Cashless Initiative’, which is streamlining payments and boosting revenue efficiency.
