Post: Food Prices Show Month-On-Month Increase Across Nigeria According To NBS Report


Abuja: The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has reported a month-on-month increase in the prices of food items such as tomatoes, beans, garri, onions, and ginger for April 2026.



According to News Agency of Nigeria, the NBS released its Selected Food Prices Watch report, highlighting that the average price of 1kg of tomatoes rose by 6.60% from N1,104.85 in March 2026 to N1,177.92 in April 2026. On a year-on-year basis, the price of tomatoes saw a decrease of 8.23% from April 2025.



The report also noted that the price of 1kg of brown beans increased by 0.99% month-on-month, moving from N1,325.85 in March to N1,338.93 in April 2026. However, on a year-on-year basis, there was a notable decrease of 44.89% compared to April 2025.



In addition, the average price of 1kg of white garri saw a slight month-on-month increase of 0.93%, from N801.54 in March to N808.96 in April 2026. Year-on-year comparisons showed a decrease of 39.86% from April 2025.



The price of 1kg of onions increased by 0.98% from N1,153.14 in March to N1,164.39 in April 2026, with a year-on-year decrease of 22.56% from the previous year. Fresh ginger prices also rose by 0.73% month-on-month, from N5,541.25 in March to N5,581.82 in April 2026. Unlike other items, ginger experienced a year-on-year increase of 12.30%.



The report further indicated that palm oil prices saw a marginal month-on-month increase of 0.12%, reaching N2,396.32 in April 2026, and a year-on-year increase of 4.77%.



The state profile analysis within the report highlighted price variations across different regions. Bayelsa recorded the highest price for 1kg of tomatoes at N1,600.73, while Plateau had the lowest at N730.48. Oyo reported the highest price for 1kg of brown beans at N1,938.91, whereas Taraba had the lowest at N750.



Abia recorded the highest price for 1kg of white garri at N1,075.47, with Plateau having the lowest at N517.94. Abia also reported the highest price for 1kg of onion bulb at N2,115.67, while Kwara had the lowest at N684.38.



Regional analysis showed that the South-South region had the highest average price for 1kg of tomatoes at N1,561.10, while the North-West had the lowest at N822.72. The South-West and South-South regions recorded the highest prices for 1kg of brown beans at N1,787.09 and N1,764.99, respectively.



For white garri, the South-East reported the highest average price at N944.58, while the North-Central had the lowest at N673.88. The South-East and South-South regions also recorded the highest prices for 1kg of onion bulb.



Lastly, the report highlighted that the South-West region had the highest average price for 1kg of fresh ginger at N6,812.92, with the North-East reporting the lowest at N881.12.
