Post: Former FCTA Spokesman Proposes Over-40 World Cup to FIFA

Abuja:Nosike Ogbuenyi, the former spokesman of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA), has called on FIFA to establish an Over-40 World Cup for retired football stars.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Ogbuenyi submitted a proposal for the competition to FIFA via the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) secretariat. He believes the tournament would allow fans to continue enjoying the talents of legendary players beyond their active careers.

Ogbuenyi emphasized that the introduction of such a World Cup would enable audiences to watch renowned players for a longer period. The proposal was reportedly submitted following the retirement announcement of Argentine football icon Lionel Messi on October 6.

He noted that many skilled Nigerian footballers, such as Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, and others, become less visible post-retirement. The competition would accommodate players aged between 40 and 65, offering benefits to the players, fans, and the sport itself.

Ogbuenyi suggested the tournament would promote fitness among retired players, keep them in the public eye, and offer an additional income source. It would also provide mentorship opportunities for younger players and contribute to football development.

He proposed that only players who have represented their countries at the senior international level and have retired from such competitions should be eligible. The tournament is seen as financially viable, with potential revenue from broadcasting rights and corporate partnerships.

Ogbuenyi’s proposal was timed to coincide with Messi’s retirement to garner international attention. He expressed optimism that FIFA would consider and approve the innovation to enhance the global game.
