This strategic approach contrasts with the common practice of sticking to “lucky” numbers without considering probabilities.
The realization that lottery numbers are not mystical but can be approached with basic probability principles has led to changes in number selection strategies. For instance, one player in Lagos continued playing the same six numbers for years based on family advice, without significant wins. This reflects a widespread habit of relying on personal superstitions.
By tracking lottery results over several months, it was discovered that perceived patterns are often not patterns at all. For instance, certain numbers may appear frequently in a short period and then not appear for much longer. Consequently, spreading selections across the full number range rather than clustering around common choices like birthdays can be more effective.
A more varied approach includes avoiding consecutive numbers and selecting combinations that are less likely to be chosen by others, reducing the chance of shared prizes. While not leading to weekly jackpots, this strategy has resulted in five smaller wins over six months, far exceeding previous outcomes.
