Abuja: The French Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Marc Fonbaustier, has emphasized that tradition is not static but a dynamic force that can be used to challenge societal norms, address violence, and shape a balanced society. Fonbaustier expressed these sentiments during an event in Abuja organized by the French Embassy and its partners, marking the conclusion of the 2025 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence (GBV).
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event was part of the UNiTE campaign themed ‘Unite to End Digital Violence Against All Women and Girls.’ The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an annual observance from November 25 to December 10. The French Embassy, along with its partners, carried out a comprehensive program with over 20 activities across 11 states in Nigeria, involving 11 civil society organizations to raise awareness about GBV.
The French Ambassador highlighted the campaign’s message, ‘No gree for violence-No gree for GBV,’ urging people not to accept or normalize violence and to speak up against it. He noted that the recent days of activism demonstrated a shared commitment to protecting women and girls in various spaces, including online. The event also focused on confronting digital violence, a significant aspect of the ongoing struggle against GBV.
Fonbaustier also introduced a creative aspect to the event, with a show titled ‘Nwanyibuife,’ an Igbo term meaning ‘the woman is light’ or ‘a person of substance.’ He stressed that culture plays a vital role as a catalyst for change, and the fight against GBV should continue year-round through various platforms, including laws, budgets, and educational institutions.
The event received commendation from the Ministry of Women Affairs, represented by Permanent Secretary Mrs. Esuabana Asanye. She acknowledged the serious attention given to digital violence at the highest levels in Nigeria and expressed gratitude to the United Nations and the French community for their efforts in organizing the event. She reiterated that, although the official campaign had ended, the advocacy against gender-based violence would persist.
