Abuja: The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Malam Shehu Mohammed, has issued a stern warning to motorists regarding drunk driving and speeding during Valentine’s Day celebrations. The caution aims to reduce road traffic crashes during the festive period.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the warning was included in a statement released in Abuja by the Corps Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide. Mohammed emphasized the importance of avoiding reckless driving to ensure the safety of all road users during the celebrations.
He assured the public that both operational and educational initiatives are in place to protect road users throughout the Valentine’s Day period. The Corps Marshal has instructed commanding officers across the nation to increase their efforts by deploying more personnel for enhanced visibility, traffic control, and strict enforcement of traffic regulations.
Mohammed has also directed the use of breathalysers and radar guns to test suspected drunk drivers, with the goal of preventing them from continuing their journeys. ‘This is to prevent needless deaths, injuries and damage to property,’ he stated.
He highlighted the global importance of Valentine’s Day as a celebration of love and goodwill, urging drivers to remember the spirit of the day while adhering to traffic laws. Any driver found violating these laws will face sanctions, as the FRSC will not tolerate offenders.
To further enhance road safety, Mohammed encouraged motorists to utilize the FRSC’s toll-free 122 emergency line to report crashes, obstructions, or reckless driving. He reminded celebrants to follow safety guidelines and cooperate with FRSC personnel deployed nationwide. ‘Our presence on the roads is for the safety of lives and property,’ he concluded.
