Ikorodu: The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Ikorodu unit organized a Road Safety Club Quiz on Thursday for pupils and students as part of the 2026 Children’s Day celebrations, aiming to enhance road safety awareness among young Nigerians.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the event saw participation from no fewer than 16 primary and secondary schools, held at the Lagos State University of Science and Technology (LASUSTECH) hall in Ikorodu. Participating schools included Hossana High School, Purple Shores School, Cedarwood School, Kaztal Academy, Future Generation School, Lara Narrow Way School, De Best College, God’s Heritage School, and Mother’s Vine School.
The Assistant Corps Commander of the FRSC, Ikorodu unit, Kamal Kasali, emphasized the urgency of intensifying safety awareness among schoolchildren due to the increasing incidents involving students nationwide. He highlighted the importance of educating children about safety and making them aware of their responsibility towards it.
Kasali articulated that the competition was designed to instill road safety discipline in children, contributing to national development and responsible citizenship. He stated that through this initiative, students would understand their vital roles in the nation’s growth and development.
The programme is part of the commission’s broader efforts to educate young Nigerians on road safety and responsible road use. The FRSC Establishment Act recognizes the Road Safety Club as a platform for educating pupils and students on road safety matters. Additionally, the commission organizes initiatives like Youth Safety Education and the School Bus Scheme to inculcate road safety values in children.
Kasali noted that over 400 students participated in the event, which included a road walk, talent hunt, quiz competition, and award presentations. Sector Commander of FRSC in Lagos State, Kehinde Hamzat, encouraged students to prioritize their safety and develop safe road-use habits from an early age, advising them on pedestrian safety and vehicle safety measures.
Mr. Alao Joseph of the Lagos College of Medical Sciences, a guest speaker, commended the FRSC for their educational initiatives during Children’s Day. In support, he announced a scholarship award for the overall winner of the competition, describing the initiative as commendable.
Mrs. Ifeyinwa Ene, a teacher at Cedarwood School, noted the competition’s role in making pupils and students more safety-conscious. Okoh Chisom, an SSS 2 student of Hossana High School, shared that the event broadened her understanding of road safety.
Hossana High School emerged as the overall winner of the competition, with Kaztal Academy securing second place, and De Best College finishing third. The overall winner received a scholarship award from the Lagos College of Medical Sciences, along with educational materials and gifts from FRSC and its partners. Outstanding participants were rewarded with school bags, water bottles, food packs, and other items for their performances.
