Abuja: The Federation of Tourism Associations of Nigeria (FTAN) has sought stronger collaboration with the University of Abuja to advance tourism development. The partnership is expected to promote education, research, practical training, and stronger links between the university and the tourism industry.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, FTAN President, Dr. Aliyu Badaki, made the call during a stakeholders’ visit to the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Hakeem Fawehinmi, in Abuja. The meeting focused on tourism education, infrastructure development, industry partnerships, and the forthcoming Nigerian Tourism Investment Forum and Exhibition (NTIFE).
Dr. Badaki congratulated Prof. Fawehinmi on his appointment and commended the university’s commitment to tourism and hospitality education. He assured the vice-chancellor that FTAN is ready to collaborate with the institution to strengthen tourism and hospitality education. Dr. Badaki urged the university to expand practical training facilities and expose students to industry standards through stronger partnerships with private-sector operators. He also invited the vice-chancellor and students to NTIFE, scheduled for July 30 and July 31 in Abuja.
Responding, Prof. Fawehinmi welcomed the proposed partnership, emphasizing the university’s commitment to strengthening tourism education, research, and practical training. He assured FTAN of the university’s readiness to work together for the benefit of students and the industry.
FTAN Vice-President, North-West Zone, Shehu-Danfulani El-Kabir, highlighted the potential of tourism exhibitions in promoting investment in the sector. FTAN First Deputy President, Mrs. Susan Akporiaye, noted that the event would attract governors, ministers, and other high-profile stakeholders. She also mentioned that Sen. Ibrahim Ida would deliver the keynote address, while the Minister of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, would host the event.
Dr. Elizabeth Babagbale, Head of the Department of Tourism and Hospitality Management at the University, indicated that students without examinations during the event would be in attendance. Attendees at the meeting included Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof. Muhammad Ndagi; FTAN member and Glare Hospitality Managing Director, Joy Nyeso; and ATPN General Secretary, Julie Tongrit. Others present were FTAN Executive Secretary, Precious Okonji, and Director of Training and External Quality Assessment, ITPN, Elijah Dabak.
