Port harcourt: Gov. Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) gubernatorial primaries ahead of the 2027 governorship election in the state. Fubara announced his decision in a statement he issued to journalists in Port Harcourt on Wednesday.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Fubara said his move followed ‘deep reflection and extensive consultations’ with his family, friends, and associates. The governor emphasized that he took the decision in the interest of peace, stability, and unity of Rivers people, stating that leadership is about sacrifice and prioritizing the greater good.
Fubara pledged support for whoever emerged as the APC candidate, describing the party as ‘our collective home’. He expressed gratitude to his supporters for their loyalty and sacrifices throughout the political process and acknowledged the disappointment his withdrawal might cause. He reassured them that their loyalty and trust were meaningful.
He explained that his recent silence had been ‘deliberate and strategic’, highlighting the importance of taking decisions in the higher interest of the state. He reflected on the wisdom of understanding that some truths are best kept quiet for the sake of peace and a greater purpose.
Fubara extended his appreciation to President Bola Tinubu for his support and encouragement during this period. He urged APC members and supporters in the state to remain steadfast and committed to the party’s collective vision.
The governor clarified that his withdrawal should not be seen as an act of weakness or surrender, but rather as a conviction and sacrifice to ensure peace and unity in Rivers state.
