Nigeria: The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has announced that its preparations for the 2027 general elections are being financed through donations, levies, and contributions from its members, stakeholders, and well-wishers.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the NDC’s National Publicity Secretary, Osa Director, issued a statement on Tuesday to clarify the party’s funding and candidate selection processes. As a new political organization without elected public office holders, the NDC has developed mechanisms to gather resources for its operations and election-related activities.
The party’s constitution allows for contributions from aspirants, members, stakeholders, and the general public to support its activities. Osa Director emphasized that all contributions and levies are deposited directly into the designated party account and managed by the appropriate party organs. He assured that the party’s National Leader, Sen. Seriake Dickson, did not solicit or receive money from any aspirant for personal use. All funds were properly received, receipted, and accounted for in adherence to global best practices.
The party is committed to providing a full account of its finances in line with the Electoral Act and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) guidelines. Director highlighted that funding is a crucial aspect of election planning, especially for an opposition party aiming to field candidates nationwide within months of the general elections.
The NDC’s decision to seek donations and levies from its members is intended to bolster its operations and national mobilization efforts. The party explicitly stated that it is not funded by government treasuries but through contributions from its members, stakeholders, and supporters. Additionally, the NDC’s presidential and vice-presidential tickets were offered without charge, and the same principle applies to several other political positions and candidates.
