Post: Gabam-Led SDP Elects Atanda as Presidential Candidate for 2027 Election


Abuja: The Shehu Gabam-led Social Democratic Party (SDP) has elected Abimbola Atanda as its presidential candidate for the 2027 election.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, Atanda was elected during the 2026 National Convention/Presidential Primary held at Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre, Abuja. Atanda’s election came after voice votes by delegates from the 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

The party, during the convention, also ratified the nomination of Shehu Gabam as its National Chairman, along with other members of the National Working Committee (NWC). The newly elected members of the NWC include National Secretary Adebola Abbas, National Organising Secretary Dr. Uchechukwu Chukwuma, and National Legal Adviser Muka’ila Yahaya.

In his acceptance speech, Atanda promised compassionate, transparent, and people-oriented leadership for Nigerians facing hardship and uncertainty. He emphasized the need for accountable leadership focused on service, stating
his belief that Nigeria deserved better governance and opportunities.

Atanda expressed confidence in the potential of Nigerian youths, advocating for opportunities for them, while also highlighting the need for women’s inclusion and empowerment in the country’s development processes. He pledged to build a nation where merit, integrity, and service are the foundations of governance.

He appealed to delegates, party members, and supporters for their trust, prayers, and support, promising a campaign driven by ideas, unity, national progress, and constructive engagement. Atanda committed to addressing national challenges with sincerity and dignity, particularly focusing on insecurity and offering practical solutions to restore confidence and stability across Nigeria.

Atanda also vowed to lead with honesty, fairness, courage, and a respect for divine principles, while remaining committed to the ideals of the SDP.
