Abuja: Google.org has unveiled Apolitical’s Government Artificial Intelligence (AI) Campus skills training for Nigerian public servants, marking a significant step in enhancing AI capabilities within the government sector. This initiative, a global hub for AI excellence in government, was announced in collaboration with the Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the AI Campus will provide a comprehensive set of practical resources tailored for public servants. Dr. Bosun Tijani, the Minister overseeing the initiative, highlighted the critical role of AI skills in government operations, emphasizing Nigeria’s vision of AI as a pivotal driver of productivity across key sectors. He noted ongoing efforts to integrate AI into public service processes to improve efficiency and service delivery.
Olumide Balogun, West Africa Director at Google, articulated Google’s motivation for supporting this programme, underscoring the company’s commitment to Nigeria’s digital transformation. Balogun stated that by collaborating closely with public sector leaders, Google aims to provide technical resources and share knowledge, empowering civil servants to deliver more effective government services. He emphasized that AI could facilitate smarter solutions and improved social outcomes for Nigerian communities.
Chris Ferguson, Vice President at Apolitical, affirmed the importance of structured training for successful AI adoption in government. He described the initiative as a pioneering effort to equip Nigerian public servants with the necessary skills for leading digital transformation. Ferguson also mentioned ongoing partnerships aimed at expanding internet access, supporting local AI innovation hubs, and enhancing digital education to build a robust AI ecosystem in Nigeria.
Mr. Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade, Communications and Public Relations Manager, West Africa, highlighted AI’s emerging role in Nigeria’s digital transformation. He cited Apolitical research indicating that while many government leaders are running AI pilots, a significant number lack a comprehensive strategy for AI adoption. Kola-Ogunlade stressed the economic potential of AI, noting that each dollar invested could yield over eight dollars in return, thus underscoring the need for an AI-skilled public service to drive innovation and sustainable growth.
