Abuja: The Godfrey Okoye University (GOUNI), Enugu, matriculated no fewer than 784 new students into various faculties of the institution for the 2025/2026 academic session. The ceremony marked the 17th Matriculation Ceremony held at the university premises, where Vice Chancellor, Prof. Christian Anieke, highlighted the institution’s standing as the best private university in the South-East and among the top 10 private universities in Nigeria.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, Prof. Anieke underscored the importance of skills acquisition in university education, stating that it extends beyond obtaining certificates. He emphasized the development of problem-solving, analytical thinking, creativity, decision-making, communication, and research skills as crucial for employability. The university’s learning environment is designed to foster these skills across all aspects of campus life.
Prof. Anieke explained that examination questions are crafted to assess students’ analytical and problem-solving capabilities. Furthermore, the institution’s Directorates of Entrepreneurship and Competitions focus on nurturing students into solution-oriented leaders. He encouraged students to engage in social and co-curricular activities to develop their talents, while cautioning against mediocrity.
On the subject of financial discipline, Anieke advised students to practice financial intelligence, including budgeting according to income, comparing prices, saving consistently, and prioritizing needs. He reiterated the university’s commitment to strict moral and disciplinary standards, warning against involvement in cultism, drug abuse, examination malpractice, cybercrime, and other social vices. The institution also promotes spiritual development, encouraging participation in common prayers and services.
In a goodwill message, Prof. Gozie Ogbodo, Rector of the Institute of Management and Technology (IMT), Enugu, congratulated the new students and urged them to maintain the integrity and reputation of the institution by steering clear of actions that could tarnish its image.
Miss Jessica Onyeka, representing the matriculating students from the Department of Nursing Sciences, described the ceremony as a testament to perseverance. She recounted the challenges faced by many students before gaining admission and highlighted their resilience and determination. Onyeka pledged that the new students, characterized as innovative and expressive members of Gen Z, would combine knowledge with character and skills with ethics, while expressing gratitude to the university community for their support.
