Birnin kebbi: Gov. Nasir Idris of Kebbi has appealed to the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) to establish a base in the state to effectively tackle security challenges bedevilling the area. He made the plea while receiving the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar, on a courtesy visit at Government House, Birnin Kebbi.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the governor emphasized the importance of this request due to the incursion of Lakurawa bandits from neighboring countries, Niger and Benin Republics, as well as bandits operating from Sokoto, Zamfara, and Niger States. Idris highlighted that Kebbi’s international airport could support the establishment of a NAF base to aid in combating terrorism.
Governor Idris pointed out that Kebbi’s strategic location, sharing borders with Niger and Benin Republics, makes it crucial for security efforts. He noted that the once-peaceful state has been witnessing numerous attacks due to the incursions. The governor also mentioned that his administration had purchased 85 Toyota HILUX vehicles for security personnel to enhance their operations and morale.
In addition, Governor Idris discussed the Sokoto-Badagry Super Highway project, in which Kebbi has a significant stake. He stated that the state government had procured 20 Toyota HILUX vehicles for patrol purposes, ensuring the security of site engineers and workers involved in the project. Securing Kebbi, he asserted, benefits not only the state but also neighboring regions and international borders.
The governor expressed his appreciation for the NAF’s complementary role, especially in rescue missions, responding promptly to the state’s requests. Earlier, the CAS emphasized the importance of peace in Kebbi for national security, given its strategic position. The air force chief visited Kebbi to review the operational readiness of personnel and gain firsthand information about their activities.
Air Marshal Abubakar commended the security agencies for maintaining peace in the state and the Northwest region. He reiterated the essential role of security in facilitating meaningful development, stressing that collaboration with the Kebbi Government is crucial for securing the region.
