Asaba: Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has empowered 10,000 widows under the State’s Social Investment scheme, acknowledging their support during his elections. The initiative, titled ‘Delta State Widows Welfare Scheme: Widows Alert Sheriff is Doing More’, was launched to provide economic assistance to widows across the state.
According to News Agency of Nigeria, the program guarantees a monthly grant of N15,000 for each of the 10,000 widows selected from across the 270 federal wards in Delta’s 25 local government areas. These beneficiaries will also have access to free healthcare services in government facilities due to their enrollment in the state’s Contributory Health Insurance Scheme, with premiums already covered by the government.
Governor Oborevwori emphasized the importance of empowering widows who often face marginalization in their families. He confirmed a stipend increase from N10,000 to N15,000, with an immediate payment of three months’ arrears totaling N45,000. The governor highlighted the significance of welfare projects alongside infrastructure development to ensure the well-being of the population.
The administration has initiated this social investment project to include more residents in state benefits and plans to introduce additional programs for youths, women, and other groups. The governor expressed hope that more Deltans will support the government’s efforts to enhance public welfare.
Dr. Isioma Okonta, Executive Assistant to the Governor on Social Welfare Scheme and Coordinator of the State Widows Welfare Scheme, assured that the selection of beneficiaries was transparent and inclusive, involving local leaders and communities. The program aims to assist the most impoverished widows, regardless of their tribe or origin.
Mrs. Pat Ajudua, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development, praised the governor’s commitment, stating that the scheme will significantly benefit widows statewide.
Beneficiaries expressed gratitude to Gov. Oborevwori and program stakeholders, highlighting the positive impact of the monthly stipend on their businesses and families. Mrs. Christiana Akalusi, Elizabeth Mukoro, and Mercy Ololo shared their plans to use the funds to improve their livelihoods, aligning with the scheme’s objectives.
