Post: Group Conducts Eye Screenings and Drug Awareness for FCT Transport Operators

Abuja: The Transporters For Tinubu 2027 Support Group on Thursday conducted eye screenings and drug sensitisation for transport operators in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). Its National Coordinator, Mr Segun Obayendo, who spoke at the opening of the programme at the Jabi Park in Abuja, said the initiative would advance safety on the nation’s roads. The national coordinator said the programme would be organised concurrently in the various states for the next few months across the country. Obayomi urged the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Vehicle Inspection Officers (VIO) and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to continue discharging their mandate to ensure safety on the road.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, road safety is a shared responsibility, and ought to be taken seriously by everyone. Contributing, Mrs Chinwe Uwaegbute, the group’s Programme Coordinator, lauded the transport union members’ turnout, adding that their attendance reflected their collective commitment to improving safety, welfare, and professionalism within Nigeria’s transport sector. Uwaegbute, who said that transportation remained central to national development, pointed out that the demands on drivers as professionals often exposed them to health challenges and fatigue.

‘It is in recognition of these realities that this initiative has been designed as a practical intervention focused on health awareness, responsible driving culture, and sustainable welfare support for transport operators. The key components: eye screening, drug abuse sensitisation, and general wellness advocacy, address critical factors that influence safe driving. As we often say, our drivers are very confident people; once they know the route, they feel they can drive with their eyes almost closed, but today’s programme is here to ensure the eyes remain open and the body remains healthy,’ she said.

According to her, the initiative also aligns with the Renewed Hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu, emphasising human capacity development and social responsibility across sectors.
