Nnewi south: The Unubi Youth Association in the Nnewi South Local Government Area of Anambra has distributed over 900 seedlings of economic trees to farmers in the community. This initiative is part of the ‘Operation Farm to Feed Campaign’ launched by the State Government to combat hunger.
According to Voice of Nigeria, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Forster Ihejiofor, praised the initiative during the symbolic distribution event on Friday in Unubi. Dr. Ihejiofor, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mrs. Ifeyinwa Uzoka, stated that the programme aims to boost productivity and improve livelihoods in the community. The seedlings distributed include bitter kola, guava, soursop, cocoa, breadfruit, and orange.
Dr. Ihejiofor emphasized the government’s commitment to expanding the campaign to ensure greater food security and economic sustainability for farmers. He highlighted the economic potential of these trees in driving growth, enhancing food security, securing future generations, and promoting sustainability.
Earlier, the Youth Leader of the Unubi Community, Mr. Aguiyi Ezeani, described the initiative as a grassroots outreach effort to encourage mass participation in agriculture. He highlighted the fertility of Unubi land, urging residents to cultivate gardens and join the campaign to combat the food crisis in the country. The programme aims to provide at least three seedlings per household in the community, aligning with the State Government’s agenda to strengthen agriculture.
On behalf of the beneficiaries, Chinonso Udemba expressed gratitude to the organisers for the seedlings, stating that they would nurture them to reap future benefits. Udemba is optimistic that the gesture will significantly impact farmers over the next five years.
