Abuja: The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) on Sunday held an inaugural flight for the 2026 Hajj operations with the transportation of 473 Nigerian pilgrims from Kogi to Saudi Arabia. The pilgrims, who were transported through UMZA flight UMZ3501, departed Abuja to Madinah at 5 p.m.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the Vice President, Sen. Kashim Shettima presided over a brief ceremony at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, before the official airlift of the pilgrims. Shettima charged intending pilgrims for the 2026 Hajj to uphold national values that positively reflect Nigeria, and act as positive ambassadors of the country. He described the pilgrims as representatives of the country on the global stage who must portray the best of the nation while complying with the strict regulations of the host nation.

The vice president emphasized that the pilgrims carry the image of Nigeria and the dignity of its people. He urged them to reflect discipline, humility, patience, and integrity in their conduct. Shettima also spoke about pilgrimage as a binding covenant between Nigeria and its citizens, and assured that the government would uphold its duty of care while pilgrims uphold national values. He highlighted the responsibility of public institutions to ensure dignified, safe, and seamless experiences for all pilgrims.

He reiterated President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to protecting Nigerians at home and abroad, emphasizing governance as a covenant anchored on service and accountability. While Hajj remains a personal act of worship, it also showcases the strength and credibility of national institutions. Shettima assured the pilgrims of dignity, safety, order, compassion, and honor as they travel under Nigeria’s banner.

Gov. Usman Ododo of Kogi remarked on the rarity and privilege of the Hajj exercise, urging pilgrims to engage in prayers for Nigeria’s peace and socio-economic development during their spiritual journey. He also called for prayers for Tinubu and Shettima as they lead the country toward greater achievements.

Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, Minister of State for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), expressed gratitude to the President and the Vice President for their support in strengthening institutional coordination. She affirmed the FCT Administration’s commitment to ensuring a seamless experience for pilgrims traveling to and from the Holy Land.

Earlier, NAHCON Chairman/CEO Amb. Ismail Yusuf assured stakeholders of the commission’s unwavering commitment to the welfare of Nigerians. He encouraged pilgrims to conduct themselves with humility in the Holy Land. Yusuf highlighted ongoing reforms within NAHCON under Tinubu’s administration, aimed at enhancing transparency and transformation.
