Keffi: The Hope Behind Bars Africa (HBBA), a non-governmental organization, inaugurated newly renovated study centers for the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) and the National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) at the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Keffi-New, Nasarawa. This initiative aims to expand educational opportunities for inmates, enhancing rehabilitation efforts within Nigeria’s correctional system.

According to News Agency of Nigeria, the HBBA Executive Director, Mrs. Funke Adeoye, represented by the Programme Manager, Mr. Nurudeen Hassan, highlighted that this development marks a significant milestone in promoting access to justice, dignity, and opportunities for vulnerable Nigerians, including those in custodial settings. This initiative is part of the Civic Accord Project, funded by the Royal Norwegian Embassy, addressing issues such as limited access to justice and low civic participation in grassroots communities.

Adeoye emphasized that Hope Behind Bars Africa is committed to ensuring every Nigerian has access to justice and opportunities for personal growth. She detailed how the organization is transforming correctional spaces into hubs of opportunity through vocational training, formal education, and human rights-centered engagement. The newly renovated centers are seen as evidence that rehabilitation is achievable and essential, in alignment with the Nigerian Correctional Service Act.

The executive director acknowledged the support and collaboration of the Nasarawa State Command’s Controller of Corrections, the Officer in Charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, and other personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service. She also expressed gratitude to representatives of the criminal justice sector, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, and other partners for their contributions to the project’s success.

Addressing the inmates, Adeoye reiterated the organization’s belief in their potential and encouraged them to seize the opportunities provided by the centers. She called on stakeholders to continue efforts to ensure correctional facilities across Nigeria serve as centers for rehabilitation and personal transformation, aiming for a future where no one is left behind.

Mr. Anthony Sanda, Controller of Corrections, Nasarawa State Command, affirmed that education is a vital tool for the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates. He praised HBBA for its consistent support in enhancing educational opportunities within correctional centers nationwide, now extended to the Keffi facility.

Chief Superintendent of Corrections Samaila Bulu, Officer-in-Charge of the MSCC Keffi, highlighted the emotional and psychological benefits of providing inmates with educational opportunities, which can significantly aid in their rehabilitation process.

The event, organized by HBBA in partnership with the Youth Africa Leaders Initiative Network (YALInetwork) and supported by the Royal Norwegian Embassy, included the donation of educational relief items such as textbooks, notebooks, desktops, and more to the inmates.
